2012 Buckeye Bash Set For Saturday September 29th!

OSU ALUMNI CLUB “BUCKEYE BASH” FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 29^TH

The OSU Alumni Club of Darke County will hold it's annual Buckeye Bash, a tailgate style fundraiser, on Saturday, September 29^th at McBo’s in Versailles for the Ohio State vs. Michigan State football game.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase. McBo’s features bowling, putt-putt and an arcade for family fun. The event begins at 2:30 p.m., one hour before kick-off and ends approximately at 6:30 p.m.

Raffle proceeds to benefit the OSU Alumni Club scholarship program.

Winners Announced for the 2012 Scholarship Fund Football Ticket Raffle

Congratulations to the winners of the 2012 Football Ticket Raffle, which benefits the Scholarship Fund of the Ohio State Alumni Club of Darke County. Tickets are available for the annual raffle by purchase from a club member at $5 a piece or 5 for $20 or with one entry awarded for a paid annual membership to the Ohio State Alumni Club of Darke County. Mike Dohme might just be the luckiest person in Darke County -- he had two tickets picked, with him winning first choice which of course, meant Michigan. He later chose the University of Alabama at Birmingham for his second selection, which was 5th overall.

Next year, you could be a lucky winner! Either join our club at $10 for a single or $15 for a joint membership and get a free entry or buy tickets at $5 a piece or 5 for $20. Tickets are typically available beginning in March.

Local Buckeye Alumni Donates Time, Talent at 156th Great Darke County Fair

Buckeyes are not much more loyal than Jan Boyer; she is loyal to everything in which she takes part. Believe my surprise when I saw her as the pleasant lady about ready to paint tattoos on both of my sons' arms at the 156th Great Darke County Fair. In the brief time I sat with Jan, I learned some interesting information about her; she was a dual major at Ohio State in home economics teaching and home economics extension work. Not only that, she was a pretty good artist, with some very nice paintings on display. She had been at the fair on Friday the 23rd from 10 AM until 8 at night...a schedule which she meticulously kept daily to keep the young fair goers happy. At a $1 donation to the Darke County Arts, the $1 was a small donation to get to sit with a treasured member of our community and our club. The bonus was that by the time she was done, my boys were smiling.

2012 Send Off Picnic for Darke County Buckeyes

On Tuesday August 7th Darke County's Ohio State Alumni joined together for a picnic to send off the 2012-13 Ohio State Freshmen from our great county. The picnic has been an annual tradition and is enjoyed by both club members and students. The picnic this year was held earlier than in prior years which will be a new trend; as a reminder, Ohio State switched to semesters for this academic year. Enjoy a few photos of this year's Freshman class!

Darke County Junior's Make Annual Visit to OSU Campus

Thirty-two Darke County high school Juniors from five county high schools traveled to The Ohio State University for a campus tour on May 1^st.  This was the 13^th annual tour sponsored by the OSU Alumni Club of Darke County.  The tour began with a campus overview provided by an Admissions Counselor.  Information about majors, courses of study, activities, work-study programs, costs and scholarships were provided as well as student life and what it is like to be a Buckeye.  The students were divided into two groups for an hour and a half walking tour of campus, led by student ambassadors.  The students met together for lunch at the newly renovated Kennedy Commons, one of the campus dining halls. 

The OSU Alumni Club of Darke County wishes to provide our County high school students an opportunity to see first hand the excitement and experiences that Ohio State has to offer.  We had a great group of students attend our trip on May 1^st and we look forward to providing this opportunity again next year.

OSU Scholarship Golf Outing Set To Tee Off June 11th

Greeting Buckeye Fans and Alumni,

This is James Conway and and I am here to talk about our Scholarship Golf Outing. The 16th Annual Darke County OSU Alumni Scholarship Golf Outing will be held on Monday, June 11^th at the Turtle Creek Golf Course, formerly the Greenville Golf Course, which is located at 6545 US RT 36 East in Greenville. Registration will begin at 11:30AM with a shotgun start at 12:30PM.  The golf outing format is a four person team with a two net best ball.

The event raises money for scholarships for Darke County students who will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall. At our banquet in May, we will present over $5,000 in scholarships to four deserving high school seniors.  We have helped over 65 Darke county students attend The Ohio State University.

There are various ways you can participate to help make this event a success. You can register to participate in the tournament as a golfer or as a four person team, you can be a sponsor of the event or volunteer during the outing.

Save the Date! The 2012 Spring Gala Is Set for Tuesday, May 1st!

Greetings Darke Buckeye Alumni, Friends, and Fans!

The 2012 Annual Spring Gala will be held on Tuesday May 1st, 7PM at The Little Italian Cafe ... 180 E. Third St. in Greenville (937-547-1000). Our guest speaker will be Frank Moscowitz, editor and publisher of The Buckeye Sports Bulletin. The cost will be only $5.00 per person this year. Our scholarship recipients will have their ticket and meal provided by the association, but all other meals will be "ala carte" . That way we can keep ticket prices low and each individual can get exactly what they want .. no more, no less. We will see if this is the way to go in the future. A usual, yearly dues will be accepted at this time.

Looking forward to another fun and informative evening.

The Buckeyes are Coming! (To Greenville on Saturday March 24!)

Good Evening and a warm O-H!

I wanted to share some exciting news for any locals interested. Select Alumni of the Ohio State University Football program will be coming to Greenville on Saturday night March 24 to take on the Greenville Area All-Stars in a Charity Basketball game. The Buckeyes have been touring the area throughout the month of March and from first hand experience I can attest the games have been competitive, fun, and loaded with names you will recognize.

In Tipp City on March 3, the Buckeye team featured '02 National Championship team members Dustin Fox (Minnesota Vikings in NFL), Simon Fraser (Atlanta Falcons in NFL), and Andy Groom (Washington Redskins in NFL) as well as James Cotton, Stanley Jackson ('97 Rose Bowl Champions), Todd Boeckman (St. Henry Redskin!) and Roy Hall (Indianapolis Colts in the NFL).

In Vandalia on March 10, the Buckeye team featured Brian Hartline (NFL- Miami Dolphins), Andy Katzenmoyer (All-American, former New England Patriot), Michael Wiley (Dallas Cowboys in NFL), Maurice Wells, Stanley Jackson, Ahmed Plummer (San Francisco 49ers in NFL) and Todd Boeckman.

The lineup will not be revealed ahead of time and is subject to change. The Ohio State Alumni of Darke County nor Scott '05 are affiliated with this appearance, just spreading some news to Buckeye Fans.

The game starts at 7 PM, with doors opening at 6. A free autograph signing will take place during half time.

2012 Spring Gala Date Set for Tuesday May 1st!

 OSU Alumni Club of Darke County President Ken McCoy is proud to announce that our 2012 Spring Gala speaker and date has been counfirmed. We are happy to announce that our guest speaker will be Mr. Frank Moskowitz, who is publisher of the popular publication "Buckeye Sports Bulletin". The date will be Tuesday May 1st, 2012 with a venue yet to be determined. 

We are already looking forward to a fun night of camaraderie and insight on the arrival of Urban Meyer.

Ohio State Versus Michigan Game Watch

Attention Buckeye Fans: The Ohio State Alumni Club of Darke County will be hosting a game watch party for the OSU vs. Michigan game on Saturday, November 26^th at Score Board Sports Club (1137 Sweitzer Street) in Greenville.  Doors open at 11am with the game kicking off at noon.  There will be food specials and discount pricing on bowling for the kids.  So make sure to come out and cheer the Buckeyes on to victory against that team up north!

I write to let you know that this morning the Comprehensive Breast Center at The Ohio State University is being named in honor of Stefanie Spielman. A cherished alumna and member of our Ohio State family, Stefanie became a tireless advocate for breast cancer research after being diagnosed with cancer in 1998 at age 30. She transformed her own challenge into extraordinary blessings for countless breast cancer patients and their families, becoming a personal source of help and a national source of hope.

Stefanie Spielman was a forceful advocate for early detection and research because she knew those two factors were the keys to curing cancer. In the first six months after Stefanie's diagnosis, she and her husband, Chris, raised more than $1 million for research and patient assistance at Ohio State. To date, the Spielman Funds have raised more than $9.1 million.

As we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we also celebrate the incalculable contributions of a remarkable person. The work Stefanie began endures through the relentless advocacy of Chris Spielman and their children.

It is our shared vision that the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center will be the place where breast cancer ends. Many of the nation's leading scientists, researchers, and physicians are working in our world-class facilities to turn that phrase into reality. I look forward to the day we can announce the cure for breast cancer in the building that now bears Stefanie Spielman's name.

Worth the Drive: "Pro Football in Ohio" at the Troy Hayner Cultural Center

While I know this is obviously a blog about the Darke County OSU Alumni Club, I found it worth mentioning that the Troy Hayner Cultural Center in Troy, Ohio is currently hosting a special exhibit containing artifacts from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton revolving around "Pro Football in Ohio". The NFL was rooted in Ohio (especially Dayton- GO TRIANGLES!) in the 1910's and early 20's and the exhibit helps tell the story about it. On display (Buckeye related) is a small tribute to Troy native and former Buckeye All-American Bob Ferguson and a game-worn Bengals Archie Griffin jersey.

At a short 25 minute drive, it is worth the price of admission: FREE!

Pro Football in Ohio October 7 - November 27 This exhibit will include memorabilia on loan from the Canton Pro Football Hall of Fame related to the five early Ohio football teams, the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals, and from Troy’s pro football players including Kris Dielman, Tommy Myers, Tommy Vaughn, Gordon Bell and others.

A Message From Archie....

It has been a challenging year for Ohio State football.
The team, administration, and our great alumni and fans have experienced some trying times as we’ve dealt with issues involving our program. We all take a great deal of pride in Ohio State football, and it’s disappointing when it doesn’t live up to the lofty expectations that have been established, whether we are talking about on- or off-field standards.
I’ve been asked quite often about the NCAA violations and allegations made against our program. I wish I had an easy answer that would satisfy everyone, but that is not the case.
The fact is that some serious mistakes were made. As a university, we acknowledge that reality. Those mistakes involve a number of people both inside and outside the program, although I do think the far-reaching nature of the problems has been overstated.
Still, we need to move past the point of meting out blame. As Woody often said, it isn’t getting knocked down that is important, it is how you get up. I have full confidence that regardless of what mistakes were made, we are going to learn from them and take the steps necessary to make sure they do not happen in the future.
We are committed at Ohio State to developing a state-of-the-art, campus-wide compliance program. We will have the best possible protocols and processes in place that ensure we meet our own high bar of success. Buckeyes are about leading, and in this case we will make certain that our compliance standards are impeccable. That is essential.
Since the NCAA investigation process is not complete as of this writing, I can’t share specifics on what will change. I can say that these mistakes have caused people across the university to take a long, hard look at how we handle the business of compliance and the culture of our football program. That self-examination has been fruitful and will lead to some necessary and important steps toward improvement.
In the interim, I know this situation has caused stress for our alumni and fans. Ohio State football is always in the spotlight; and when that spotlight reveals flaws, it can be tough to take. We understand that reality and sympathize with you.
At the same time, I hope you recognize that there are so many reasons to be proud of your university. Unfortunately, the football situation has overshadowed many of Ohio State’s amazing achievements. In some instances, these aren’t being broadly reported in the media, but they show great success in Ohio State’s core work and are evidence that your alma mater is progressing at an exceptional rate.
Here are a few recent and exciting developments, and I would encourage you to share these with others if you have the opportunity:  

• The OSU Medical Center was recently named among the nation’s top-10 academic medical systems, the only Ohio hospital to make the list.
• GE Capital recently pledged $10 million to Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business to help conduct research on middle-market U.S. businesses.
• The university’s new freshman class is the strongest in school history, averaging an ACT score of more than 28.
• Ohio State ranks second nationally in industry-sponsored research and had a record $829 million research expenditures for fiscal year 2011. This is evidence that the university is making good on its status as one of the country’s top research institutions.

There are other facts I could present that show the great work that is happening here. That is why despite the challenges we are facing with our football team, I feel so confident about where we are headed at Ohio State. We will get past these trying times, and we will be better off for it.

This evening's Buckeye Bash is another AWESOME SUCCESS! I, Scott '05, was around long enough to see a Scarlet and Gray crowd growing larger by the minute to see the very first Big Ten Meeting of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Nebraska Cornhuskers. Join us Downtown Saturday October 8th for Buckeye Bash!

This Saturday, October 8th 2011 join co-hosts the OSU Alumni Club of Darke County and Main Street Greenville  for a game watch at the "Downtown Buckeye BASH". The event will mark this Saturday's Nebraska-Ohio State showdown and will be held from 6:00pm -11:00pm. The game watch will begin at 8 PM and will be held Downtown Greenville behind The Palace Building, which is located at the corner of 5th and Broadway. There will be activities for the whole family such as: Kids activities (6:00-9:00 pm), Taste of Downtown, Chili Cook-Off (7:00-1st quarter), Reverse Raffle (pre-sale tickets-$500 cash prize), Beer Tent, Best Dressed Buckeye Fan Contest (contest at half time), and an Adult Football Throw Contest. There will also be big screen televisions set up throughout the tents so you will have the best seat in the house!

All proceeds from event support Darke Co. OSU Alumni Scholarships and Main Street Greenville Projects.

A thought from the Editor on the 2011 Football Season

My Facebook wall has been resembling a craigslist ad as of late. I had 3 opportunities to purchase tickets to the first game of the season at face value and 4 opportunities to buy Toledo tickets at less than face value. Wow! Where's the catch? I mean, we are talking about tickets to see one of the greatest university's in college football play, right? Believe me, I'm not ungrateful at the offers....I'm just wondering why since I graduated in 2005, I have had zero offers to buy tickets at such reasonable rates from people and then this year, I have people asking me to "make offer".

Like we have said for years....."Hang on Sloopy"....These times will not last. Granted, the "tattoos for trophies" scandal is our biggest in recent history but anyone that knows Ohio State Football history knows our football program has battled adversity before. Woody Hayes' dismissal in 1978 was quickly forgiven (temporarily) with Earle Bruce's near National Championship in his first year calling the shots. In the early 1960s (1961), the University declined bowl invitation on the heels of allegations that the University was becoming a sports factory. Did it affect the University? Name one player that played football for the Buckeyes between 1962 and 1967....It took 7 years for the program to rebound before the "Super Sophs" of 1968 immortalized themselves in Buckeye folklore.

Time and change will surely show How Firm Thy Friendship.....

Darke Buckeyes Justin Rismiller and Maria Goubeaux Honored as "Top 20" Seniors By The College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

It is with great excitement that the Ohio State Alumni Club of Darke County extends our warmest congratulations to two Darke County natives that have been honored by their respective college at The Ohio State University as "Top 20 Seniors".

The two Darke County natives are Justin Rismiller, native of Rossburg and Maria Goubeaux, native of Versailles.
