A Message from E. Gordon Gee, President of The Ohio State University

Dear Colleagues, Students, and Friends:

The late Stefanie Spielman and her husband and OSU great
Chris Spielman. Photo courtesy pink.osu.edu
I write to let you know that this morning the Comprehensive Breast Center at The Ohio State University is being named in honor of Stefanie Spielman. A cherished alumna and member of our Ohio State family, Stefanie became a tireless advocate for breast cancer research after being diagnosed with cancer in 1998 at age 30. She transformed her own challenge into extraordinary blessings for countless breast cancer patients and their families, becoming a personal source of help and a national source of hope.

Stefanie Spielman was a forceful advocate for early detection and research because she knew those two factors were the keys to curing cancer. In the first six months after Stefanie's diagnosis, she and her husband, Chris, raised more than $1 million for research and patient assistance at Ohio State. To date, the Spielman Funds have raised more than $9.1 million.

As we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we also celebrate the incalculable contributions of a remarkable person. The work Stefanie began endures through the relentless advocacy of Chris Spielman and their children.

It is our shared vision that the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center will be the place where breast cancer ends. Many of the nation's leading scientists, researchers, and physicians are working in our world-class facilities to turn that phrase into reality. I look forward to the day we can announce the cure for breast cancer in the building that now bears Stefanie Spielman's name.

Sincerely,

E. Gordon Gee
President

Worth the Drive: "Pro Football in Ohio" at the Troy Hayner Cultural Center

While I know this is obviously a blog about the Darke County OSU Alumni Club, I found it worth mentioning that the Troy Hayner Cultural Center in Troy, Ohio is currently hosting a special exhibit containing artifacts from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton revolving around "Pro Football in Ohio". The NFL was rooted in Ohio (especially Dayton- GO TRIANGLES!) in the 1910's and early 20's and the exhibit helps tell the story about it. On display (Buckeye related) is a small tribute to Troy native and former Buckeye All-American Bob Ferguson and a game-worn Bengals Archie Griffin jersey.

At a short 25 minute drive, it is worth the price of admission: FREE!

Read more at http://www.troyhayner.org.

Pro Football in Ohio

October 7 - November 27

This exhibit will include memorabilia on loan from the Canton Pro Football Hall of Fame related to the five early Ohio football teams, the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals, and from Troy’s pro football players including Kris Dielman, Tommy Myers, Tommy Vaughn, Gordon Bell and others.

Go Bucks!

The Daily Advocate's Coverage of the 2011 Buckeye Bash

The OSU Alumni Club of Darke County would like to thank everyone for another great turnout at this year's Buckeye Bash. While we lost a heartbreaker to Nebraska, there was a lot of fun and camaraderie to go around. Check out this video that was shared by the Daily Advocate's media team....

A Message From Archie....

It has been a challenging year for Ohio State football.
The team, administration, and our great alumni and fans have experienced some trying times as we’ve dealt with issues involving our program. We all take a great deal of pride in Ohio State football, and it’s disappointing when it doesn’t live up to the lofty expectations that have been established, whether we are talking about on- or off-field standards.
I’ve been asked quite often about the NCAA violations and allegations made against our program. I wish I had an easy answer that would satisfy everyone, but that is not the case.
The fact is that some serious mistakes were made. As a university, we acknowledge that reality. Those mistakes involve a number of people both inside and outside the program, although I do think the far-reaching nature of the problems has been overstated.
Still, we need to move past the point of meting out blame. As Woody often said, it isn’t getting knocked down that is important, it is how you get up. I have full confidence that regardless of what mistakes were made, we are going to learn from them and take the steps necessary to make sure they do not happen in the future.
We are committed at Ohio State to developing a state-of-the-art, campus-wide compliance program. We will have the best possible protocols and processes in place that ensure we meet our own high bar of success. Buckeyes are about leading, and in this case we will make certain that our compliance standards are impeccable. That is essential.
Since the NCAA investigation process is not complete as of this writing, I can’t share specifics on what will change. I can say that these mistakes have caused people across the university to take a long, hard look at how we handle the business of compliance and the culture of our football program. That self-examination has been fruitful and will lead to some necessary and important steps toward improvement.
In the interim, I know this situation has caused stress for our alumni and fans. Ohio State football is always in the spotlight; and when that spotlight reveals flaws, it can be tough to take. We understand that reality and sympathize with you.
At the same time, I hope you recognize that there are so many reasons to be proud of your university. Unfortunately, the football situation has overshadowed many of Ohio State’s amazing achievements. In some instances, these aren’t being broadly reported in the media, but they show great success in Ohio State’s core work and are evidence that your alma mater is progressing at an exceptional rate.
Here are a few recent and exciting developments, and I would encourage you to share these with others if you have the opportunity:
  • The OSU Medical Center was recently named among the nation’s top-10 academic medical systems, the only Ohio hospital to make the list.
  • GE Capital recently pledged $10 million to Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business to help conduct research on middle-market U.S. businesses.
  • The university’s new freshman class is the strongest in school history, averaging an ACT score of more than 28.
  • Ohio State ranks second nationally in industry-sponsored research and had a record $829 million research expenditures for fiscal year 2011. This is evidence that the university is making good on its status as one of the country’s top research institutions.

There are other facts I could present that show the great work that is happening here. That is why despite the challenges we are facing with our football team, I feel so confident about where we are headed at Ohio State. We will get past these trying times, and we will be better off for it.

A thought from the Editor on the 2011 Football Season

My Facebook wall has been resembling a craigslist ad as of late. I had 3 opportunities to purchase tickets to the first game of the season at face value and 4 opportunities to buy Toledo tickets at less than face value. Wow! Where's the catch? I mean, we are talking about tickets to see one of the greatest university's in college football play, right? Believe me, I'm not ungrateful at the offers....I'm just wondering why since I graduated in 2005, I have had zero offers to buy tickets at such reasonable rates from people and then this year, I have people asking me to "make offer".

Like we have said for years....."Hang on Sloopy"....These times will not last. Granted, the "tattoos for trophies" scandal is our biggest in recent history but anyone that knows Ohio State Football history knows our football program has battled adversity before. Woody Hayes' dismissal in 1978 was quickly forgiven (temporarily) with Earle Bruce's near National Championship in his first year calling the shots. In the early 1960s (1961), the University declined bowl invitation on the heels of allegations that the University was becoming a sports factory. Did it affect the University? Name one player that played football for the Buckeyes between 1962 and 1967....It took 7 years for the program to rebound before the "Super Sophs" of 1968 immortalized themselves in Buckeye folklore.

Time and change will surely show How Firm Thy Friendship.....

The Ohio Union's Photo Gallery from Dr. Gee's visit to Darke County

In case you missed it, there were photographers from the Ohio State University on hand at the Dr. Gee visit to KitchenAid. The Ohio Union website has uploaded all photos from this event which I have linked below:

A Link to the Ohio Union Photo Gallery from Dr. Gee's Visit to Darke County

In news that might make Buckeyes and fans sick, it was overlooked by most in attendance that half of these photos were being taken by none other than Star Wide Receiver DeVier Posey, who maintained such a low profile that only few in attendance knew it was him. Thanks a lot, Eric for not telling me that at the time! :)

The Ohio State University President Gordon Gee and the Buckeyes Roll Into Darke County

Today June 28th the Ohio State University President Gordon Gee and a busload of Buckeye Students toting school spirit took over the KitchenAid Store in Downtown Greenville. On a scheduled appearance of the "President Gee State Tour", OSU's President made appearances throughout the Darke and Mercer Counties. Students informed me that they spent the day yesterday in Mercer County and today started at Midmark in Versailles, moved to the KitchenAid Center in Greenville, and were to make another tour stop before finishing the day at a Dayton Dragons game this evening.

While the crowd was not overwhelming, it was ample to show that Darke County has Buckeye Pride. Local media, alumni, business professionals, and local Buckeye fans crowded the entrance and inside of the KitchenAid store for a makeshift 'pep rally' that included Brutus Buckeye, two Buckeye Cheerleaders, and over a half-dozen student ambassadors.

While my photos were not the best due to flash and blur issues, the pictures tell the story. Please enjoy!

Here, Mayor Mike Bowers poses for a photo with the Ohio State students in attendance including Brutus:

Brutus has fun with local alumnus Wilma Heiby:

A young Buckeye fan with the OSU Cheerleaders in attendance:

Grady (Class of 2031) was 'wooed' by Brutus for a hug:

If mischief is to be found, Brutus is just the right 'nut':

Dr. Gee did some baking in the KitchenAid kitchen:

Dr. Gee talks with locals:

Past President Eric Brand with Brutus:

Granted, they are blurry but tell a funny conclusion to Brutus trying to get a hug from Grady....

Cheerleader Brittany gets the hug from Grady and Brutus is in disbelief:

First and foremost, a huge thanks to the University and Dr. Gee for arranging a visit to our county. Secondly, what a bright future this state has with the Buckeye students that were in attendance; they were bright, polite, and were most definitely worthy of being leaders for tomorrow.

Spring is in the Air at the 2011 Alumni Club Gala!

Buckeyes young and old gathered once again for the annual Spring Gala on Tuesday May 24th at the Bistro off Broadway in downtown Greenville. It was a delicious evening of Buckeye camaraderie and celebration of our 2011 Scholarship Recipients and we were proud to have nearly 40 students, parents, and alumni and friends in attendance.

Our guest speaker was Vladimir Nazlymov who is Ohio State's National Championship Winning (and former Soviet Gold Medalist!) Fencing Coach. The scholarship award winners were humored by Coach Nazlymov's invitation to the already free Fencing matches and for his perspective on coming to America after his upbringing in the former Soviet Union.

Enjoy some candids from the evening!

Monday Morning Quarterbacking the 2003 Fiesta Bowl

Good Evening Buckeyes!

I wanted to share a memory from my college years and frankly, a memory of the greatest OSU game of the past 40 years. I wrote this blog originally in November of 2009 and posted it on my personal blog. I thought it was a fun memory that I'm sure others will be able to relate.

This morning I found myself in the same position as every Monday and Tuesday morning: commenting and reflecting on the football game I watched the night before. This morning had a unique twist to the conversation as I was second-guessing and analyzing the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, a game that was played over 8 years ago. I pulled my DVD of the uncut broadcast out of the dust of the DVD shelf to remember the greatest OSU victory of my lifetime. As confused as my colleauges were, they were a little more animated and excited than I expected them to be while recollecting the game as well.

Some observations....

1) The first quarter belonged to Miami. After watching the first quarter, I was wondering how the Bucks would pull the game out. Maurice Clarett was getting shut down on the run, the passing game was careless (but came up big later in the game when it needed to), and Miami was constructing some solid ball movement down the field.
2) The turning point of the game was undoubtedly the Dorsey interceptions. The only advantage Ohio State had over Miami in the first quarter was that they picked off Dorsey and had multiple sacks. I believe the stat going into the game was that Dorsey had only been sacked 4 times all season. The Buckeyes laid him on the ground at least twice on the opening drive.

3) The biggest play of the game was the Sean Taylor Interception turned Maurice Clarett ball strip. The Buckeyes for five seconds seemingly made a huge blunder that would have allowed them to possibly put away the Hurricanes early when Craig Krenzel had an errant pass intercepted in the endzone in the third quarter. The score was Bucks 14, Miami 7 at the time. Sean Taylor of the Hurricanes, looking to make a big play, decided to attempt to return the ball out of the end zone for a big gain. Maurice Clarett, having the greatest moment of his life, made a huge play by stripping the ball from the arms of Taylor on the return. The play set up a Mike Nugent field goal, which put the Buckeyes up 17 to 7.

4) The Bucks defense was the star of the game, but Craig Krenzel was awesome when he needed to be. Not to take away credit from Michael Jenkins, who was an underrated and oft forgotten hero of that Buckeyes team and of that game, but Krenzel brought both a legitimate pass threat and a great running attack. His efforts reminded of a Rex Kern-like performance. He completed only 7 of his 21 passes, and was intercepted twice. However, he ran the ball 19 times for 81 yards and two scores. In addition, he took a beating from the Hurricane defense. The pass to Jenkins on 4th and 14 in the 1st overtime to keep the drive alive was something that did not surprise Buckeyes fans...he had been coming up big like that all season long. If anyone ever forgets why Craig Krenzel was a hero to Ohio State sports history, look no further than this game.

5) Maurice Clarett: before his troubles and exile from the Bucks, he legitimately was a game-changing player for the 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes team. His performance in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl was most memorable as the decoy that set up Craig Krenzel, ball running hero.

6) The infamous "Pass Interference" call in the first overtime was perhaps incorrect. However, if it was incorrect, it made up for the missed call of "holding" on the Miami defender that was mugging Chris Gamble on his way to the pass. Either call would have given the Buckeyes a first down. I think that sports nation has recognized this, that's why it is a forgotten moment in BCS history.

That wraps up my "Monday Morning Quarterback" commentary. Look for the 2007 BCS National Championship commentary sometime in 2015. Better yet, maybe not. I watched that game when it was originally aired....NOT...SO...GOOD.

Have a memory of this game? please share by leaving a comment!

High School Campus Visit Declared a Success!

Thirty-four Darke County high school students from six of our county high schools traveled to The Ohio State University for a campus tour on May 3rd.  This was the 12th annual tour sponsored by the OSU Alumni Club of Darke County.  The tour began with a campus overview provided by an Admissions Counselor.  Information about majors, courses of study, activities, work-study programs, costs and scholarships were provided as well as student life and what it is like to be a Buckeye.  The students were divided into three groups for an hour and a half walking tour of campus, led by student ambassadors.  The three groups met together for lunch at Baker Commons, one of the campus dining halls.
The OSU Alumni Club of Darke County wishes to provide our County high school students an opportunity to see first hand the excitement and opportunities that Ohio State has to offer.  We had a great group of students attend our trip on May 3rd and we look forward to providing the opportunity again next year.
A big THANKS to Janelle Brinksneader for the write-up and to everyone that helped once again make the trip a success!

Aloha! A Warm O-H to the OSU Alumni Club of Hawaii!

I made a social connection today with Tom who is the Treasurer of the Ohio State Alumni Club of Hawaii. We shared our love of the Buckeyes despite being thousands of miles apart and having the Pacific Ocean between us. We discussed our club's websites and I promised to share his link with the club as who wouldn't want to see Buckeye Pride Waikiki style? To check out the webpage for the OSU Alumni Club of Hawaii, click this link:

Ohio State University Alumni Club of Hawaii

Tom informed me that the club has some 'killer' Hawaiian shirts that the club sells, with a different design yearly. Personally, I could see a couple of our club members warming up to these for golf season....

He noted that there are a few size Large and size XL of the previous versions from 2010 as well.

He said that if anyone is going to be visiting Waikiki during football season, be sure to join one of their game watches. There will be no sleeping in for those Noon Game Days.....those games start at 6 AM in Hawaii!
To visitors from our 50th and last (but not least!) state, Welcome!

Miscellaneous News, Rumors etc.

Good Evening, Buckeyes!

Mailers going out this Week

A double-sided membership/gala form will be mailed out this week to current and past members from the last three years (2008-09 to 2010-11). The form is simply a request to renew club dues or re-join us, a pre-registration for the Spring Gala (May 24!), and also is an invitation to visit this blog for a copy of the digital newsletter which can also be viewed by clicking here. At this point, we are waiting on a list from the Alumni Association to help us bring in some new club members. If anyone knows of someone that may be interested in joining the club or attending our gala, please let me know a name and address and I will gladly mail out a newsletter and/or membership enrollment form.

Club Elections to be held at Spring Banquet
I thought I would pass along an update as I failed to mention the news in the newsletter. This year's alumni banquet also will have its biannual elections for officer positions. As most of you know, in addition to my new tasks of being a blogger and newsletter writer/editor, I have served as the Club's Treasurer the past two years. I have put the club 'on notice' since December of 2010 that I would not continue the role of Treasurer after elections. Therefore, if you are interested or know somebody that might be interested in taking over the Club's Treasurer post, please let me know at osuacofdarke@gmail.com and I will forward to the Club's Board for consideration.

Dr. Gee coming to Darke County?
I do not have any details or confirmations but there is rumor that OSU President Dr. E. Gordon Gee will be visiting Darke County in the near future. While details are sketchy, the news I heard had his visit pegged for early June. As details emerge and are confirmed, I will report them.....if anyone can confirm or deny this news, please provide me details at osuacofdarke@gmail.com.

What's your story, Darke Buckeyes?

To begin this blog, I want to share briefly my best memory of being a Buckeye:

I spent the majority of my time as a Buckeye at a regional campus to save on room & board.....I almost dropped out when I moved halfway across state to Greenville due to marriage and a poor transfer report from Wright State that indicated after 170 credit hours at OSU I would still have to take another 2 1/2 years with them to complete a B.S. I had never visited main campus for a class and it was not until I met with an academic advisor at the Fisher College of Business in August of 2004 that I fell in love with the beauty of the business college and re-dedicated myself to finishing school. I spent the next 5 consecutive quarters driving between Greenville and Columbus 100 miles each way 2-5 days per week. I put 47,000 miles on my car in a little over a year. I worked part-time in Greenville at Hamilton Motors from 7:00-11:30 AM and then drove to Columbus and returned home between 11 PM-midnight. I still know certain things: it is 100 miles exactly from Hamilton Motors' parking lot (now Spirit Medical) to Ohio Stadium where I used to park for class. Once you hit the Springfield exit for the Clark County Fairgrounds, it is exactly 1 hour away from Greenville, about another 40 minutes from Campus.

A fellow club member had an interesting observation last week that had me thinking. She commented that whenever someone asked her what her best memory as a Buckeye was, she wanted to have something to share that would amaze the person.

While my story just makes me sound like a lunatic, there are others with great stories to share. We all love vintage photos and stories from the good ol' days.

With that segway.....

Do you have memories of being a Buckeye? Please share them.....one of my favorite things is reading the different memories former Buckeye athletes have....each of us have a story that is every bit as interesting.....

Thank you in advance for your time, thoughts and words.

Let's Go Bucks!

I just thought I would pass along some information for anyone that may be interested....The Miami Valley Centre Mall in Piqua Ohio is hosting a sports cards and collectibles show this weekend February 11-13. On Saturday February 12th, special autograph guest will be Brandon Saine, who was 2006's "Mr. Ohio" and is a Piqua native. He will be signing autographs from 1 until 3. His autographs will be free for the first, $5 for additional autographs. On Sunday February 13 from 2 until 4, Wide Receiver Dane Sanzenbacher will be signing autographs for $5 each with a maximum of 3 autographs per person.

I have been tracking Buckeye signings from around the state and these are the cheapest prices that either Brandon or Dane can be obtained. For anyone interested in tracking autograph signings of Buckeyes in and around Ohio, please visit http://www.buckeyesignings.com/

A Message from Archie Griffin, President of the Ohio State Alumni Association

I think most people know how I feel about paying forward. Woody Hayes introduced this idea to me, and as my life has progressed I’ve learned more and more how important and meaningful it is.
That is one reason I love my role at the Alumni Association. It gives me so many opportunities to pay forward, and I get to see first-hand the great work that our alumni clubs and societies do to pay forward as well. Our groups are the best, and consistently do things in their communities that represent Ohio State well.
My strong belief in helping those in need is one reason that the Alumni Association started its Charity Bowl efforts prior to the BCS National Championship Game in 2007. That year, we adopted the Recovery School District in New Orleans and asked alumni to provide their support. They responded as Buckeyes usually do, with an outpouring of generosity that helped raise nearly $70,000 for the impoverished school district.
Since then, Charity Bowl efforts have raised more than 70,000 meals for those in need and thousands of dollars for Ohio State’s important Students First, Students Now scholarship initiative. This year, we turned our focus back to food.
I have been asked why we selected food pantries again as our focus this year. To me, the answer was simple: You help where there is a need. And there is no question that this is a need.
I think we are all familiar with the economic challenges that our country is facing right now. Those challenges have created a much greater need for food donations, because demand on food pantries is rising. In 2011, the Mid-Ohio Foodbank expects to distribute four million more pounds of food to those in need than it did last year. At the same time, the MOFB is also experiencing a decrease in donations from the food industry, and those donations account for roughly half of all donations made to the Foodbank each year.
The story at MOFB is the same at countless other food pantries throughout the country. Demand for assistance is up, but supply is down. With this in mind, we decided to again ask alumni around the country to pitch in and help in any way they can.
There are a few ways you can assist this effort. Monetary donations to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank are perhaps the easiest way to give and you can donate by visiting our virtual food drive online at go.osu.edu/BeatHungerNow. Or, you can donate food by dropping it off at Longaberger Alumni House.
However, we recognize that we have a widespread alumni base and people may want to help in their home regions, so we encourage you to give locally, too. We’ve already heard from alumni clubs who are donating money, food, and volunteer time to food pantries in their areas. We’ve also heard from individual alums that are helping through donations or volunteerism.
To be honest, I don’t have a great deal of concern over how you help just that you choose to join the effort. We intend to keep the Charity Bowl open until the end of February and have set a goal of surpassing the 72,000 meals we generated from our last effort.
If you or your group are participating in an effort to support the Charity Bowl, we want to hear about it. You can fill us in on your good works by sending an e-mail to community@ohiostatealumni.org with the subject line: Charity Bowl. Or contact alumni club leader Kimberly Lowe (lowe@ohiostatealumni.org) or society leader Craig Little ( little@ohiostatealumni.org) to make sure that your group’s effort is counted.
In general, I hope our clubs and societies continue to focus on charitable efforts once the Charity Bowl is complete. Although we undoubtedly draw focus to a specific effort at this time of year, the commitment to pay forward is an everyday commitment in my mind. So whether you are supporting the effort now, or engaging in community service this spring or summer, I hope you continue to keep paying forward as a priority for your group.
Thank you again for your time and effort supporting this worthy cause. We’ve made a difference before in this area and I know we will again.

My Favorite Buckeye

As proud supporters of our beloved Alma Mater, it is easy to get caught up in the fervor of our excellence in athletics. At the age of 29, I have memories of many great Buckeyes in both football and basketball. The first dominating force in basketball that I remember as a kid was "Jimmy J", none other than All-American Jim Jackson. In football, the first mega star of my lifetime was Eddie George. I treasure the memories I have of watching both of them play. I remember Jim Jackson leading a very talented Buckeyes squad to 2 near-Final Four appearances. My very first Buckeye Game I ever attended was 1995's Illinois-Ohio State match up when Eddie George rushed for 314 yards on his way to the Heisman Trophy.

While I have watched many great athletes and great performances in my life as a Buckeye, my favorite Buckeye is one I was not alive to see play.

If you see me around on Saturdays in Autumn, you will see me sporting a scarlet jersey with the number "10" and the name "KERN" on the back, for Ohio State's legendary quarterback of 1968 until 1970. The first time I learned about Rex was when I was no more than 10 years old. Growing up in north central Ohio, I had "Buckeye Nuts" for parents and watched a lot of football videos. I watched "The 10 Year War" with my Dad where I learned about the gridiron feats of Rex Kern. He was the complete package; he was a smooth passer and a nimble runner. He rushed for over 500 yards each of his three seasons while throwing for over 2,400 yards in his career. Most of all, he won. During his three seasons at Ohio State, he led the Buckeyes to a 27-2 record that included the 1968 National Championship and National Football Foundation-recognized 1970 National Championship.

While we treasure all of our Buckeyes, do you have a favorite?

Post it in the comments!
